Dental Safety and Sterilization in Ottawa

You should be able to ask how a dental team prepares for your care. Infection prevention includes the handling of instruments, treatment areas, protective equipment and relevant health information. Each part has a different job.

Understanding dental safety and sterilization in Ottawa

Ontario dental practices are expected to follow the applicable infection-prevention standards. At BluSky Richardson, ask the team to explain how the relevant process applies to your appointment if you have a question or concern.

Our aim here is to make the terminology clearer. A clean-looking room alone does not tell you how an instrument has been processed, and a statement that everything is sterilized would not accurately describe every item used in dentistry.

Reusable instruments and single-use items

Some items are designed for one use and then disposal. Reusable equipment follows a process suited to how it is used and the manufacturer's instructions. Cleaning removes debris; disinfection and sterilization are different processes with different purposes.

Instruments that require heat sterilization must be prepared, processed and handled appropriately afterward. Monitoring and records help assess whether the process is functioning as intended. You can ask the clinic how it manages the relevant instrument pathway without needing to understand every technical detail yourself.

The treatment area

Surfaces and equipment also need the appropriate cleaning, disinfection or barrier process between patients. These measures are separate from preparing instruments. Gloves and other protective equipment form another part of care and do not replace hand hygiene.

For questions about the standards behind these practices, the RCDSO patient resource is a useful reference.

Information you can share before a visit

Tell the team about allergies, relevant medical conditions and any concern your medical provider has raised about dental treatment. If you develop symptoms of illness before an appointment, call and describe them along with your dental need.

The response may differ for a routine visit and an urgent problem. Discuss arrangements rather than assuming you should either attend as planned or leave an urgent dental concern untreated.

Questions are welcome

You can ask how an item is prepared, whether it is single-use, or whom to speak with about a concern. A clear explanation is more helpful than a broad promise that no risk exists.

If you need a particular accommodation or have had a reaction during previous care, mention it when booking. The team can clarify what can be arranged and whether further information is needed.

Mention a concern early

If a previous experience has made you uneasy about infection prevention, explain what happened. A specific question helps the team give a relevant answer before treatment starts.

See the technology and safety FAQs for related questions about imaging and treatment tools, or contact Richardson to discuss your visit.
