Gum Grafting Ottawa

Knowing what to expect can make gum surgery easier to prepare for. If a graft has been recommended, the next step is understanding which area will be treated, how the procedure will be carried out and what recovery will involve.

BluSky Dental Richardson can help you talk through that plan and the care arrangements. You should know who will perform the procedure and where your follow-up will take place.

Preparing for Gum Grafting in Ottawa

Gum grafting adds tissue around a tooth where more coverage or support is needed. The exact procedure depends on the condition of your gums and the treatment goal. For a comparison of tissue sources and reasons for a graft, see gum graft options.

Before surgery, confirm which teeth or areas are included. Ask whether tissue will be taken from another part of your mouth and whether there will be more than one area to care for afterward.

Provide an up-to-date health history and medication list. Tell the treating clinician about smoking or nicotine use, allergies and previous healing problems. Follow their preparation instructions and do not stop prescribed medicines without advice from the appropriate professional.

Plan the Practical Details

Ask how much time to allow for the appointment and which activities should wait during recovery. The answer depends on the procedure and the demands of your usual routine. Someone with a physically demanding job may need different arrangements from someone who works at a desk.

Confirm the anaesthetic plan. If sedation is involved, obtain the specific instructions for eating, drinking, an escort and transport. Do not assume the arrangements from a previous dental visit apply.

Prepare suitable food and any recommended supplies before the appointment. Keep the clinic's contact details where you can find them easily afterward.

During the Procedure

The clinician prepares the recipient area and positions the selected tissue. Sutures help hold it in place during early healing. If your own tissue is used, the donor area also needs attention.

Local anaesthetic is used as appropriate for the procedure. Let the team know if you feel discomfort or need a break. Ask what sensations to expect rather than relying on a promise that every patient will have the same experience.

Protecting the Healing Area

Follow your written instructions for cleaning, eating and activity. Avoid pulling at the lip or disturbing the graft to inspect it. Ask how to keep the rest of your mouth clean while protecting the surgical area.

Some soreness or swelling can occur. Your instructions should explain the expected pattern, how discomfort will be managed and which changes require a call. Contact the treating team for persistent bleeding, worsening symptoms or concerns about the graft.

Do not judge the final result from its early appearance. Healing tissue changes over time, and the review appointment allows the clinician to assess its progress.

Keep any scheduled review even if the area feels comfortable. Comfort alone does not show how the graft is healing.

Your Follow-Up Matters

At review, ask when normal brushing and cleaning can resume around the site. Discuss the factors contributing to recession so your daily routine supports the treated area.

Complete root coverage is not always achievable. Your clinician should explain what outcome is realistic and how it will be assessed. A graft also does not remove the need to monitor the rest of your gums.
