Porcelain Veneers in Ottawa

Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic restorations placed on the front of selected teeth. They can change aspects of colour, shape and proportion, but they are also a commitment to maintaining restored teeth. A good decision considers both the smile you want and what the treatment asks of your natural teeth.

Considering porcelain veneers in Ottawa

At BluSky Richardson, start with the particular change you want. You may be concerned about a discoloured tooth, uneven edges or several teeth that look different from one another. The assessment checks whether veneers are appropriate and whether a more conservative option could meet the same goal.

Healthy gums, the amount of enamel, existing restorations and the bite all matter. A veneer is not a way to cover over an untreated cavity or avoid diagnosing a painful tooth.

What veneers can and cannot change

Veneers can alter the visible front surface. They may suit selected shape differences, stains that are not well addressed by whitening, or small cosmetic irregularities. The final design must still allow comfortable function and cleaning.

They do not move the roots of teeth or correct every bite problem. Trying to disguise substantial crowding with restorations can involve more preparation than moving the teeth first. Ask whether orthodontic treatment would better address the underlying concern.

Compare the alternatives first

Teeth whitening may be enough when colour is the main issue. Composite bonding can make selected additions or repairs and may be easier to repair later. Leaving a healthy tooth unchanged is also an option when the concern is appearance alone.

A crown covers more of a tooth and is usually considered for a different structural need. It should not be treated as interchangeable with a veneer simply because both can change appearance. Ask why the proposed restoration suits the amount of healthy tooth remaining.

Planning the result

Discuss shape, brightness and the characteristics you want to preserve. Photographs, models or a trial stage may help communicate the plan where appropriate. A preview can guide the discussion, but lighting, materials and your anatomy influence the final appearance.

Decide on the overall colour sequence before making new restorations. Ceramic will not whiten along with natural teeth later. If whitening is part of the plan, its timing should be coordinated with shade selection.

Preparation and fitting

Many veneer plans involve removing some enamel. That change is generally irreversible, and the tooth may need a restoration in the future even if the veneer is removed. A no-preparation approach is suitable only for selected circumstances and should not be assumed from a marketing label.

Records are taken for fabrication, and temporary restorations may be needed depending on the preparation. At fitting, the dentist checks appearance, margins, contacts and the bite before final attachment. Ask when you can review the proposed appearance and which adjustments remain possible at that stage.

Sensitivity can occur, and veneers can chip, debond or require replacement. The dentist should discuss the risks relevant to your teeth and the possibility of needing more extensive treatment if a tooth develops another problem.

Caring for the finished work

Clean the teeth and gumline consistently and keep review visits. Avoid using veneered teeth to open packaging or bite hard objects. If you grind or clench, ask how that affects the plan and whether protection is appropriate.

Ceramic resists some staining, but surrounding teeth, margins and gums still change. No treatment freezes the appearance of your mouth permanently. Maintenance and future replacement belong in the original budget discussion.

Questions about this treatment

No. The number depends on the concern, visible smile and colour or shape goals. Ask to compare a limited approach with a larger plan rather than assuming a full set is required.

There is no guaranteed service life. Material, bite, preparation, oral health and habits all affect the result. Ask how repairs and replacement would be handled.

Clarify planning records, temporary work, final restorations and follow-up. Cosmetic insurance coverage should be verified rather than presumed.
