Sedation Dentistry in Ottawa

You should be able to talk about dental fear before agreeing to treatment. Whether the worry comes from an earlier experience, a strong gag reflex or not knowing what will happen, describing it helps the team plan care around you.

Beginning sedation dentistry in Ottawa

At BluSky Richardson, the first step is discussing your concern and the dental work you may need. Sedation is one possible tool. Clear explanations, a stop signal, breaks and staged appointments may also make a difference.

An assessment considers your health, medicines, past experiences and the proposed procedure. The team then confirms the appropriate provider and setting for any sedation. The existence of several options does not mean every method suits every patient or is available at every appointment.

Understand route and depth

The route describes how a medicine is given, such as inhaled gas, a tablet or an IV. Depth describes its effect on awareness and responsiveness. Those are related but different decisions.

Minimal sedation aims for relaxation while you remain responsive. Moderate sedation reduces awareness further while preserving purposeful responses. Deep sedation and general anaesthesia require a different level of assessment, monitoring and support. Your clinician should name the intended level rather than relying only on a term such as sleep dentistry.

Options to discuss

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is inhaled with oxygen through a nose mask. Nasal breathing, medical suitability and the planned procedure help determine whether it is appropriate. Preparation and discharge advice still need to be confirmed.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation uses prescribed medicine taken by mouth. Effects vary between people and can last beyond the appointment. Medication instructions, an escort and recovery arrangements are essential parts of the plan.

IV sedation

IV sedation gives medication through a vein. It does not automatically mean unconsciousness. The intended depth, provider, monitoring and recovery requirements must be explained for your treatment.

Deeper sedation or general anaesthesia

Some circumstances call for a deeper approach or another care setting. Our sleep dentistry page explains why it is important to clarify the exact meaning of that phrase before choosing treatment.

What sedation does not replace

Local anaesthetic may still be used to numb the treatment area. Sedation does not replace the diagnosis, consent discussion or careful dental work. It also does not guarantee that every procedure can be completed in one long visit.

Ask about the dental plan separately from the sedation plan. You should understand which teeth or tissues are being treated, what alternatives exist and how later care will be arranged.

Preparing safely

Share your complete medicine and health history, including sleep apnea, allergies, previous anaesthetic reactions and alcohol or other substance use. Tell the team if your health changes between assessment and treatment.

Follow the written instructions for food, drink, regular medicines and transport. Never add an unapproved sedative to help yourself through the appointment. If directions are unclear or conflict with another clinician's advice, resolve that before taking the medication.

Discharge restrictions depend on the sedation used and your recovery. Arrange the required escort and supervision in advance. Feeling less drowsy is not enough to decide independently that you can drive or return to demanding activities.

Making a decision at your pace

It is reasonable to start with a conversation, especially if you have avoided care for a long time. Tell the team if you need an explanation of the visit before treatment is considered. You can also ask for a written outline of the proposed approach.

Questions about this treatment

No. Assessment, appropriate training, monitoring and preparation help manage risk, but do not remove it. The clinician should explain the risks relevant to you and the planned method.

That depends on the method and your response. No-memory promises are not a substitute for explaining the expected level of awareness.
