Recovery after wisdom teeth removal depends on the procedure and your health. Your treating clinician's written instructions should guide eating, cleaning, medication and activity.

Use this page to prepare questions and practical arrangements. It does not replace the directions provided for your own surgery.

Planning Wisdom Teeth Recovery in Ottawa

Confirm your transport and supervision arrangements, especially if sedation is planned. Ask how long you should avoid driving, demanding work and responsibility for others.

Prepare suitable foods and any recommended supplies in advance. Keep the treating team's contact details and after-hours instructions available, rather than trying to find them when a concern arises.

If you are arranging time away from work or school, explain the physical demands of your usual day. Recovery after several surgical removals may differ from a straightforward single extraction.

Protect the Surgical Areas

The early clot and healing tissues need protection. Follow instructions about rinsing, smoking, drinking through straws and touching the sites. Avoid repeatedly inspecting or probing the sockets.

Cleaning the rest of your mouth remains important. Ask how to adapt brushing near the surgical areas and when any prescribed rinse should be used. The directions may change as healing progresses.

Do not use someone else's aftercare schedule if it differs from the one you were given.

Eating, Drinking and Medication

Choose foods compatible with the instructions and your comfort. Avoid biting numb lips or cheeks, and be careful with hot food and drinks while sensation is reduced.

Take medicines only as directed. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before combining pain products, particularly if another medicine contains the same ingredient. Never use leftover antibiotics or change a prescribed course without advice.

If nausea or discomfort makes drinking difficult, contact the treating team. Staying informed about a problem is more useful than trying to follow an impossible routine silently.

Know When to Call

Some soreness, swelling and limited opening can occur after surgery. What matters is the expected course for your procedure and whether symptoms are changing in a concerning way.

Contact the treating clinician for persistent bleeding, worsening pain, fever, increasing swelling or another unexpected change. Severe pain that develops after initial improvement also deserves assessment.

Breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapidly spreading swelling or uncontrolled heavy bleeding requires emergency medical care. Call 911 when needed.

Keep the Follow-Up

The review checks healing and any remaining concerns. Ask whether sutures need attention and when normal activity can resume. Feeling better does not always mean the site is ready for every activity.

If numbness persists beyond the expected anaesthetic effect, report it promptly so it can be assessed and documented.

Questions to Resolve Before Surgery

The treating provider should explain the route for postoperative concerns. Keep that information with your instructions, including when to use emergency medical services instead.

Raise allergies, interactions or earlier reactions before the procedure. If a problem appears afterward, contact the clinician or pharmacist for an appropriate alternative instead of substituting another person's medicine.

Follow the instructions for your sites and stage of healing. Do not start probing or forceful irrigation because you have seen someone else do it. If an irrigation device is prescribed, ask when and how it should be used.

Avoid digging into the area. Contact the team for guidance, particularly if it is accompanied by increasing pain, swelling or a bad taste. The response depends on the stage of healing and the symptoms, not just the appearance of the socket.

Returning to Your Routine

Increase activity according to your instructions and symptoms. Do not use a fixed online timetable as a reason to ignore discomfort or return to strenuous work early.
