Sinus Lift Ottawa
BluSky Dental Richardson
When an implant is planned near the upper back teeth, the sinus above the jaw can limit the available bone height. A sinus lift is one procedure used to create space for bone augmentation in a suitable case.
At BluSky Dental Richardson, the discussion starts with your implant plan and the anatomy of the site. Not everyone missing an upper molar needs this procedure.
Why the Sinus Matters
The maxillary sinuses sit above the upper back teeth. After tooth loss, the available space for an implant may be limited by the relationship between the jawbone and the sinus.
A sinus augmentation procedure lifts the membrane lining the sinus and places graft material beneath it. The aim is to develop adequate support for planned implants, not to treat ordinary sinus congestion.
Assessing a Sinus Lift in Ottawa
The assessment considers bone dimensions, sinus anatomy and your health. Appropriate imaging helps the treating clinician plan the approach and identify issues needing further evaluation.
Mention previous sinus problems, surgery, infections and relevant medications. A history of sinus symptoms does not automatically exclude treatment, but it can affect investigation and timing.
Ask whether an oral surgeon or periodontist will provide the procedure and how care will be coordinated with the implant restoration.
Compare the Implant Plan and Alternatives
The need for augmentation follows the complete treatment design. Ask whether another implant approach or a different tooth-replacement option is reasonable for your anatomy.
An alternative is not better simply because it avoids a graft, and a graft is not justified solely because it could be performed. Compare expected benefits, risks, maintenance and total treatment time.
Our implant overview and bone grafting page provide the wider context.
Procedure and Healing
There are different surgical approaches, selected according to the bone available and the amount of augmentation needed. Implants are sometimes placed during augmentation and sometimes after a healing period.
Your clinician should explain which sequence is proposed. Immediate implant placement is not a promise that the final tooth can be fitted immediately.
Discuss risks such as membrane perforation, infection, sinus complications or graft failure. The significance of these risks depends on your case, and additional treatment may be needed if a complication occurs.
Prepare for Recovery
Follow the specific instructions about sinus pressure, activity, cleaning and medication. Ask what symptoms are expected and when to contact the surgical team.
Do not borrow recovery directions from a routine extraction or another patient's graft. Keep your review appointments so healing can be assessed before the next stage.
Keep Sinus Symptoms on the Record
Report a recent cold, sinus infection or change in symptoms before surgery. The treating clinician can decide whether timing or assessment should change. Do not assume a previously agreed date remains suitable when your health has changed.
Understand the Complete Estimate
Clarify whether the proposed cost includes the graft, implant placement, restoration and reviews or only one stage. Any outside provider's fees should also be identified.
