Seeing and recording the mouth
Dental radiographs help show structures that are not visible during a direct examination. Three-dimensional imaging can add information for selected clinical questions, but it is not a routine requirement for everyone.
An intraoral camera can help show a visible area, while a surface scan records shape for tasks such as making a restoration or appliance. These records have different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Ask whether existing records can answer the question and why a new image or scan is recommended. The technology FAQs explain these distinctions in more detail.
