Tooth Extraction Ottawa

If a tooth has been recommended for removal, you deserve to understand why. An extraction may be appropriate when a tooth cannot be predictably restored or when removal is part of another carefully considered plan.

At BluSky Dental Richardson, the discussion starts with the tooth's condition and your options. Bring any previous recommendation, X-rays or questions about saving it.

Deciding on a Tooth Extraction in Ottawa

The dentist examines the tooth, its supporting tissues and relevant imaging. The reason for removal might involve extensive damage, advanced loss of support or another treatment need. Pain alone does not establish that a tooth must come out.

Ask what findings support the recommendation and whether a reasonable alternative exists. Depending on the problem, the discussion may include root canal treatment, a crown or a specialist assessment. These options are not suitable for every tooth.

If you are uncertain, ask what can safely wait while you consider the decision. An urgent infection and a planned removal for another reason may require different timing.

Understand the Appointment

An extraction can be straightforward or require a surgical approach. The tooth's position, roots and surrounding structures influence the plan. Ask who will provide the care and whether referral is needed.

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the treatment area. You may notice pressure or movement; tell the clinician if you feel pain. If anxiety is a concern, discuss it before the appointment so the team can explain appropriate sedation options and their requirements.

Provide your current medication list and health history. Do not stop medication because you assume it will interfere with an extraction. Your dentist and prescribing clinician can advise when coordination is needed.

Plan for the Space Before Removal

Ask what will happen after the tooth is removed. Some spaces require a replacement plan; others do not. The location of the tooth, your bite and the reason for removal guide that decision.

Options can include a bridge, implant or denture. Each has a different treatment sequence and maintenance needs. If an implant is being considered, ask whether the extraction plan should account for future bone and tissue requirements.

A replacement is not automatically fitted on the day of removal. Clarify what you can expect during healing and which appointments would follow.

After Your Extraction

You will need instructions for controlling bleeding, protecting the socket, eating and cleaning your mouth. Follow the guidance given for your procedure and contact the treating team if anything is unclear.

The early blood clot is part of healing. Avoid disturbing the area and follow advice about smoking, rinsing and activity. Recovery depends on the procedure and your health, so a fixed return-to-work date cannot be promised online.

Call for persistent bleeding, increasing pain or concerns about swelling. Trouble breathing or swallowing needs urgent medical help. Keep the after-hours instructions provided by your treating team.

Arrange your follow-up before leaving and check whether you need a separate appointment to discuss replacement.

Questions Before You Proceed

Only an assessment can establish whether a repair has a reasonable outlook. Ask about the likely prognosis and the care involved in each option.

Complexity, additional treatment and anaesthetic arrangements affect the fee. Ask for an estimate that separates removal from any future replacement.

Our extraction planning guide covers coordinating removal, temporary teeth and recovery when the plan is more extensive.
